Constructs

for large orchestra (2018) | Premiere: Los Angeles Philharmonic; Ruth Reinhardt, conductor

Constructs was commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and was premiered in the spring of 2018 in Los Angeles, as part of the Nancy and Barry Sanders Composer Fellowship Program. The ekphrastic nature of the piece reflects on Marlene Dumas’ painting, Wall Weeping. This painting is derived from a photograph of Palestinian men being searched by Israeli soldiers in front of a stone wall. By removing the soldiers from the painting, the men appear to be praying at the Wailing Wall. Dumas’ artistry lies in blurring the line between the universal elements of violence and peace. Constructs similarly blurs the line between opposing musical elements through the dramatic scope of the orchestra.
